USD 160 MN GRANT FROM WORLD BANK RANIL QUIPPS

SL received USD 160mn grant from WB – PM

Sri Lanka has received USD 160 million from the World Bank, yesterday.Speaking in Parliament this morning, Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe said Sri Lanka is also due to receive a grant from the Asian Development Bank shortly.

Prime Minister Wickremesinghe said due to the non-payment of debt last month, Sri Lanka has not received the funds from the ADB thus far.

Premier Wickremesinghe noted that he is currently in the process of analysing whether the World Bank funds can be utilised to resolve the current energy crisis by purchasing petroleum products.Prime Minister Ranil Wickremasinghe also noted that a World Bank team is in Colombo at present, and he will be holding talks with them later today.The Premier noted that he has been holding discussions with foreign diplomats and Sri Lankan Ambassadors in different regions to secure funds to resolve the current petrol, energy and fertiliser crisis.

The Prime Minister said he took over the post, to help the country and resolve the issues faced by the people.Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe said he is compiling a report on the current finances of the country and will publish it next week.The Premier said all details are not available at present and he will compile the report after gathering necessary data.

Prime Minister Wickremesinghe said he will deliver his political and economic plan to the country and Parliament can debate on the matter.Meanwhile, when questioned by the opposition over his decision to take up the Prime Ministerial post, Premier Wickremesinghe said the current opposition on many occasions have defended his capabilities to manage the economy and run the country.

The Prime Minister noted that he is not in the post for perks or seeking accolades, but is focused on reviving the economy and helping the general public.
