Proposal to utilize prisoners’ labor effectively!
The Commissioner General of Prisons Thushara Upuldeniya today (06) handed over a proposal to Dr. Wijayadasa Rajapaksa regarding the effective use of prison labor to improve the industries run by the Prisons Department.The focus was placed on the effective use of prison inmates for other industries including agriculture, use of uncultivated lands owned by the Prisons Department for cultivation in case of future food shortages, further improvement of existing cultivation activities and obtaining the advice of the Agriculture Department for agricultural activities.
The Minister of Justice stated that in order to face the forthcoming food shortage, short term crop cultivation should be considered.The Minister also noted that a quick and effective program is needed to engage in agriculture activities and instructed the Prison Department to seek the assistance of the Department of Agriculture and to make effective use of the labor of the prisoners in this regard.
