Basil to relinquish US citizenship?
Former Finance Minister Basil Rajapaksa and the national organizer of the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP), has decided to relinquish his current dual citizenship, ‘Deshaya’ newspaper reports.
A senior member of SLPP has told the ‘Deshaya’ that Basil had revealed his decision to party seniors recently.
Basil Rajapaksa resigned from his National List seat following the decision to introduce the 21st Amendment to the Constitution, which includes provisions barring dual citizens from holding parliamentary seats.
This is because he is a dual citizen of Sri Lanka and the US.
However, after lengthy discussions with his party seniors and local organizers, Basil has decided to relinquish his dual citizenship and continue in politics, the SLPP senior has further noted.
