PROTESTORS SAY WE WILL NOT LEAVE SITE NOT COMPLY TO POLICE ORDER

We will not leave – Protestors

Protestors at the Galle Face protest site say that they will not leave the premises despite the police issuing an ultimatum.

In a statement, the police yesterday (03) urged protestors to leave the site by Friday 5pm (August 05) and that all illegally set up tents and camps set up on property of the government & Urban Development Authority as well as cultivations at the site must be removed by then.

Speaking to media earlier today, a group of protesters said that they will not comply with the police order by the Fort Police, which lacks a court order.

The protestors also alleged that they are being removed to sell off the protest site.

However, the St. John’s Ambulance Brigade, which was situated at the site, had removed themselves from the premises earlier today.

Earlier today, 03 writ petitions have been filed before the Court of Appeal seeking an order to suspend the police directive urging the protesters to vacate the protest site.
