REPORTS INDICATE THAT PC ELECTIONS WOULD BE POSTPONED AGAIN?

PC elections to be postponed?
Reports indicate that the Government is considering the postponement of the provincial council elections, which has already been postponed by a year once.

However, Chairman of the Elections Commission Nimal Punchihewa said that in keeping with its vested powers, the commission has decided to call for nominations for a date after 31 October, the details of which will be announced after 20 September.

He also pointed the government could bring in an amendment to the existing Provincial Council Act and postpone it.

PAFFREL Executive Director Rohana Hettiarrachchi said that that the Minister of Provincial Councils has the power to postpone the elections only once, under the existing Act. He too stated that the government could postpone it, with an amendment to the Act.

He further stated that PAFFREL will seek legal recourse if the provincial council elections are further postpone
