TO DISCUSS SRI LANKA DEBT RESTRUCTURING URGED BY JAPANESE FINANCE MINISTER

Japan urges creditor nations to discuss SL debt restructuring

Finance Minister of Japan Shunichi Suzuki has urged all creditor nations including China and India to discuss Sri Lanka’s debt restructuring.

The announcement comes after Sri Lanka reached a staff-level agreement with the International Monetary Fund yesterday.Speaking during a news conference today, Minister Shunichi Suzuki said “It’s important for all creditor nations, including China and India, to gather to discuss Sri Lanka’s debt restructuring.”

It was announced yesterday that Sri Lanka has reached a preliminary agreement with the IMF for a loan of about $2.9 billion.Responding to journalists during the media briefing, senior IMF mission chief – Peter Breuer had said, “If one creditor or creditors are not willing to provide these assurances, that would indeed deepen the crisis here in Sri Lanka and would undermine the repayment capacity.”

Meanwhile, a spokesman from the Chinese embassy in Colombo said that they hope Sri Lanka will work actively with China and work out a feasible solution expeditiously, amid concerns on debt restructuring by Chinese creditors.
