TWO MONTHS GRACE GIVEN TO MINISTERS AND MEMBERS OF PARLIAMENT TO SETTLE WATER BILLS

Ministers & MPs given 2 month notice to settle water bills

The National Water Supply and Drainage Board (NWSDB) said current and former ministers and MPs owe about Rs.10 million to the NWSDB for failing to settle their water bills.

It said current MPs owe Rs. 3 million to the NWSDB while former MPs owe about Rs. 4 million.

Also, the NWSDB said it has to collect an amount of Rs.3 million from former MPs who have passed away.

The NWSDB officials have already discussed the matter with the Secretary of the Ministry of Public Administration to recover the amount.

Accordingly, the NWSDB is to provide a report on the arrears to the Speaker within the next few weeks and the Speaker will then inform the relevant MP.Deputy General Manager (Commercial) of the NWSDB G.A. Piyal Pathmanatha said that two months will be given to the MPs to settle their arrears and the Board will disconnect the water supply if they fail to do so.

He also said that approval has been granted to recover the water bills of government officials living in their quarters, if they have arrears.The Deputy General Manager said the value of unpaid water bills by water consumers in Sri Lanka was Rs.5,200 million by the end of last August, and 21,527 water connections were terminated following a massive programme implemented.
