Fowzie returns to Parliament as MP!

A.H.M. Fowzie was sworn in as a Member of Parliament before Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena this morning (09).

Mr. Fowzie was appointed to fill the vacant MP seat following the resignation of SJB MP Mujibur Rahman.

Rahman resigned as an MP in order to contest for the post of Mayor of Colombo in the upcoming Local Government election.

At the previous General Election, the SJB secured six seats in Colombo. Mr. Fowzie garnered 48,701 votes and ranked 7th in the preference list.

Fowzie, who also served as a Mayor of Colombo, is now 85 years old.

Dinesh Schaffter murder : Aggrieved party says contradictions in postmortem report

The aggrieved party of late businessman Dinesh Schaffter today informed court that they have noticed several contradictions and inconsistencies in the postmortem report compiled by the Colombo Judicial Medical Officer.

President’s Counsel Anuja Premaratne appearing for the aggrieved party told court the initial postmortem report had suggested that death was due to strangulation but final postmortem report submitted to the court has concluded that Schaffter’s death was due to cyanide poisoning, contradictory to the initial report.

Meanwhile, taking into the consideration the facts, Colombo Additional Magistrate Rajindra Jayasuriya announced that the verdict of the inquest into the death of businessman Dinesh Schaffter would be delivered on March 8.

Applications called for 200 fully funded scholarships in India

The Indian High Commission in Colombo is inviting applications for around 200 fully-funded scholarships for Sri Lankan nationals, across various levels.

These scholarships are being offered for studies in prestigious Indian Institutes and Universities across subject domains but not including Medical/Paramedical, Fashion Design and Law courses. The scholarships offered exclusively for Sri Lankan nationals are for 2023-2024 academic session.

The schemes under which these scholarships have been offered are:
• Nehru Memorial Scholarship Scheme: This scheme covers Undergraduate/Post Graduate & PhD courses in various domains such as Engineering, Science, Business, Economics, Commerce, Humanities and Arts, among others.
• Maulana Azad Scholarship Scheme: Masters Degree courses with preference to Engineering, Science and Agriculture courses.
• Rajiv Gandhi Scholarship Scheme: Undergraduate courses specifically in the field of Information Technology, leading to a Bachelor of Engineering and Bachelor of Technology.
Each of the above schemes covers full tuition fees for the entire duration of the course, monthly sustenance allowance, and annual grant for books and stationary. In addition, air fare to the nearest destination in India and an annual grant for educational tours to various parts of the country, apart from several other auxiliary benefits are also offered. Selected candidates would also be provided hostel facilities inside the respective campus.

The Government of India selects meritorious Sri Lankan nationals for award of these coveted scholarships. Selection of candidates is done in consultation with the Ministry of Education, Government of Sri Lanka. Necessary details are available on the website of the Ministry of Education at www.mohe.gov.lk. Interested applicants and their parents are advised to approach the High Commission of India, Colombo or Ministry of Education, Government of Sri Lanka to learn more about eligibility criteria and selection procedure.

Vadiwel Suresh resigns from posts in SJB

Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) MP – Vadivel Suresh has decided to resign from all posts held by him within the political party.
According to reports, he has resigned as a protest against the conduct of the party leadership – Sajith Premadasa.
