Distribution of Chinese donated school uniform material, commences

 

The distribution of school uniform material granted to Sri Lanka as Chinese aid, kicked off today (23).

The First 3 million meters are being dispatched to 1.34 million students in Northern, Eastern, North Central and Uva Provinces.

According to the Chinese embassy in Sri Lanka, the Chinese ambassador – Mr. Qi Zhenhong and Minister of Education – Susil Premajayantha, State Minister – Arvind Kumar carefully inspected the donated school uniform materials donated before they were dispatched to the different provinces.

The embassy also notes that a shipment carrying another 06 million meters of fabric will arrive Colombo in 44 containers next week.

Speaking at the event, Minister of Education – Susil Premajayantha had said that Chinese government, which had initially agreed to provide 50% of the school uniform material requirement as a grant this year, has responded positively to the request made after becoming the Minister of Education and increased the grant to 70% of the requirement.

Former chairman of the Committee on Public Finance (COPF) – Dr. Harsha de Silva has said that it was him who was initially proposed by the opposition as the nominee for the COPF chair.

“Actually it was my name that was proposed by the opposition as the nominee from the opposition. It was approved two days ago. But today the government abused their power and used Mayantha to get their way. Good luck to everyone,” he tweeted.

Public outrage against Iraj’s musical show! (Pics)

Local residents have expressed outrage against preparations that have been going on for the live music show planned to be held by artiste Iraj Weeraratne in Galle tomorrow (24), ‘Sri Lanka Mirror’ learns.

The show is titled as ‘Aluth Kalaawak’ and is to be held at the Galle football ground.

It is said that the preparations have left the ground damaged, angering locals of the area.

The ground, which was left abandoned during the days of the Covid-19 pandemic, was later restored by the local residents themselves.

It is reported that Galle Mayor – Priyantha G. Sahabandu (who was elected under the SLPP ticket) had given permission to hold the musical show in the football field.

LG polls was announced legally – Elections chief

The Chairman of the National Election Attorney Nimal Punchihewa said the Local Government Election was called for legally as per the country’s constitutions and the election law.

He told News 1st on Thursday (23) that all members of the National Election Commission consented to the Local Government Election Process.

He said that given that funds were not being provided to continue with the election process, the National Election Commission will meet on Friday (24) to reach a final decision on the Local Government Election 2023.

The statement came from the Elections Chief after Sri Lankan President Ranil Wickremesinghe told Parliament on Thursday (23) that the country’s National Election Commission has not legally called for an election, and there are no funds to conduct an election.

Commenting on the debate requested by the opposition on postponing the election, the President said there is no election for one to be postponed.

The President said the proposed Parliament Select Committee must be appointed to inquire into the Election Commission and the Local Government Election.
