The Election Commission is scheduled to announce the new date of the Local Government (LG) Elections today (03).

Although the local government election was scheduled to be held on March 9 this year, the Election Commission, which met on February 24, decided to postpone it due to the lack of funds and the delay in printing ballot papers.

Accordingly, the Election Commission said that the election will be postponed for a period of not less than 21 days.

However, the tenure of 339 LG institutions except Elpitiya Pradeshiya Sabha would come to an end on March 19.According to the Election Commission, 59 recognized political parties and 329 independent groups have submitted their nominations for the election.
