WIMAL’S ARREST WARRANT RECALLED

Warrant issued to arrest Wimal, recalled

 

The Colombo Chief Magistrate’s Court today (14) recalled the arrest warrant that was issued against former Minister Wimal Weerawansa after the latter appeared before the court presenting a motion.

The magistrate had previously issued the warrant after Mr. Weerawansa failed to appear for a case filed on charges of causing public inconvenience by blocking the roads around the United Nations (UN) Compound at Thummulla, Colombo when the then-UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Prince Zeid Al Hussein visited Sri Lanka in the year 2016.

Seven persons, including MP Wimal Weerawansa, Weerakumara Dissanayake, Piyasiri Dissanayake, Mohammed Muzammil, Jayantha Samaraweera, and Rojer Senevirathne have been named as the accused in the case.

The case is to be taken up again on June 19.

No discussion of a cabinet reshuffle – Bandula

Cabinet spokesperson Minister Bandula Gunawardena said that there was no discussion of a cabinet reshuffle.

He said this while responding to queries raised at the Cabinet briefing held today (14).

The ‘Irida Aruna’ had reported this Sunday that the President has raised the need for a cabinet reshuffle and to make a change to the portfolio of mass media.

The report further cited that the President has proposed to replace Mass Media Minister Bandula Gunawardana with Minister Manusha Nanayakkara.

Korea to fund floating solar plant project

Sri Lanka’s Cabinet of Ministers has granted approval to go ahead with a pilot project to install Floating Solar Panel Power Plants on the surface of Kiriibban Wewa reservoir and Chandrika Wewa reservoir in the Ratnapura District.

Under the Framework Convention on Grant Aid signed between the Republic of Korea and Sri Lanka in 2009, the Minister of Trade, Industry and Energy of the Republic of Korea has agreed to provide a grant amounting 6.83 Billion Korean Won for the implementation of a pilot project to install floating solar panel power plant with 1 MW capacity on the surface of reservoirs.

Korea Institute for Advancement of Technology is acting as the monitoring agency for the pilot project on behalf of the Korean government, said the Department of Government Information.

Accordingly, the Cabinet of Ministers approved the proposal presented by the Minister of Power and Energy to sign the documents between the Korea Institute for Advancement of Technology, the Ministry of Power and Energy and the Department of External Resources to start and implement this pilot project according to the agreement reached.

Sri Lanka – China Economic, Educational & Cultural Association inaugurated

Sri Lanka – China Economic, Educational and Cultural Association was inaugurated on 11 March 2023 at a meeting chaired by Ambassador Dr. Palitha Kohona, at the Embassy.  Sri Lankan businessmen, entrepreneurs, professionals and the student community in Beijing and nearby provinces attended the meeting.

This organization aims at facilitating greater connectivity between the government of Sri Lanka and Sri Lankans in China.  This Association will play a key role with the Embassy in promoting tourism, investment and market access for Sri Lankan products.

Ambassador Dr. Palitha Kohona, in his remarks, highlighted the current economic situation in Sri Lanka and emphasized the need and the duty of overseas Sri Lankans to lend a helping hand in the recovery process.  He welcomed all Sri Lankans in China to assist in the efforts of the Embassy in achieving economic, tourism, investment and other goals.  He called on the students in particular to work with the local community to build bridges between China and Sri Lanka.  He encouraged all to learn the language and become familiar with the cultural manners.

The Office bearers of the organization elected include: Chairman Chiranjaya Udumullage, Secretary Jerry Adrian, Treasurer U. Darshika, Social Coordinator Ravimal Handuwala, and Student Representative Asela Prabhath.

The other office bearers elected were:  Vice Chairman Anura Banda, Assistant Secretary Trevor Adrian, Assistant Social Secretary Dinushi Weerasinghe, Assistant Treasurer Andrea Perera and Assistant Student Representative Sithumina Godewatta.
