Rail tracks to be imported from China?

 

A decision has been taken to import 10,000 rail tracks from China under the loan assistance of the Asian Development Bank, the Transport Ministry said.

It said the imported rail tracks will be received by the end of next month.Meanwhile, the Railways Department said that many spare parts including nails needed for railway maintenance have also been imported.

A senior official said that renovation will be commenced once the rail tracks are received.

The speed of trains has been reduced in many places due to dilapidated tracks severely affecting train services along the coastal line.

As a result, the Railways Department recently took steps to reduce the train speed from Colombo Fort to Panadura to 30 kilometers per hour.

Indian HC hosts Iftar

Indian High Commissioner in Sri Lanka – Mr. Gopal Baglay hosted a grand iftar dinner in Colombo yesterday (11) .

Minister of Foreign Affairs of Sri Lanka – Ali Sabry attended the event as Chief Guest.

The event was also attended by Minister of Buddhasasana, Religious and Cultural Affairs – Vidura Wickramanayake, State Minister of Rural Economy – K. Kader Masthan, Members of Parliament, members of diplomatic corps, guests from various walks of life including business and media.

Liquor stores to remain closed for 2 days

The Excise Department said that all liquor stores across the country will be closed tomorrow (13) and the day after (14) in view of the Sinhala and Tamil New Year.

In a statement, the department said that a special operation to raid illegal liquor is currently underway and will continue until the 31st.

Technical Consultative Committee members given appointment letters

The newly appointed members of the Technical Consultative Committee for Sri Lanka Cricket were given their appointment letters by Sports Minister Roshan Ranasinghe at the Ministry yesterday (11).

Speaking at the occasion, Minister Ranasinghe said that he will not hesitate to take bold and correct decisions at the right time for the betterment of sport.

In order to resolve issues in Cricket, a Technical Consultative Committee was appointed in accordance with the powers vested in the Minister under the third paragraph of the Sri Lanka Cricket Constitution as amended on 8th January 2020 and under Section 41 of the Sports Act No. 25 of 1973 which should be read with Section 39(03).
