NEW COMMON ALLIANCE PROPOSED

Opposition to form new common alliance.

Several opposition parties met today to discuss the formation of a common alliance with the aim of opposing the anti-democratic activities of the current government.

The discussion focused on all opposition parties joining hands to form a new alliance to address the government’s political, economic, and social policies.

Opposition Leader MP Sajith Premadasa said in a statement that the discussion was held at the Parliamentary complex today.

During the discussion, it was pointed out that several laws to be introduced by the government violate the democratic and human rights of citizens. Therefore, the opposition parties have decided to work together to defeat such actions of the government, he said.

Professor G. L. Peiris, Dallas Alahapperuma, Rauf Hakeem, Mano Ganesan, Lakshman Kiriella, Imthiaz Bakeer Markar, Chandima Weerakkodi, Dr. Nalaka Godaheva, Udaya Gammanpila, Dr. Harsha de Silva, Weerasumana Weerasinghe, Gajendra Ponnambalam, Dayasiri Jayasekara, and Gevidu Kumarathunga participated in the discussion.

Pointing out that local and international awareness must be brought to the said issues, MP Premadasa said that Imthiaz Bakeer Markar was appointed as the convenor of the proposed new alliance with the consent of all party representatives.
