Umara summoned to obtain statement

 

Singer Umara Sinhawansa, who faces allegations of distorting the national anthem, has been summoned to the Ministry of Public Administration and Home Affairs to obtain a statement.

It is reported that Umara has been informed to appear before the Ministry today (02).Prime Minister Dinesh Gunawardena has informed the Secretary of the Ministry of Public Administration and Home Affairs – Mr. Ranjith Asoka to conduct an inquiry and submit a report on the allegations levelled against the singer.

Reports add that a statement is to be obtained from Sri Lanka Cricket as well.

Fire near Victoria Dam

A fire has broken out in the jungles in close proximity to the Victoria Dam, reports say.

According to the Engineer in charge, the fire has not posed a threat to the dam so far.

Water tariffs to be upped from tomorrow

Water tariffs will be revised from tomorrow (Aug 03), the National Water Supply and Drainage Board (NWSDB) has said.

The relevant gazette notification is to be issued tonight.

The General Manager of the NWSDB mentioned that although the water tariffs will be increased by around 30% – 50%, low-income families will not be affected by the tariff revision.

Announcement on getting passport services from Vavuniya office

The Department of Immigration and Emigration has issued an announcement regarding obtaining passport services from the Vavuniya Regional Office.

It states that in order to reduce the existing congestion, only the residents of the Northern Province, Eastern Province and Anuradhapura District will be eligible to obtain the necessary services from the Vavuniya Regional Office, from tomorrow (03).
