SRI LANKA HOPES OF A SEMI FINAL BIRTH IN HUNG ON A TREAD

World Cup: Can Sri Lanka still make semis ?

All 10 teams are still just about in the hunt to claim a place in the ICC Cricket World Cup knockout stages, with no team yet to be mathematically eliminated – even defending champions England.

Here is the state of play following Afghanistan’s crucial win over Sri Lanka on 30 October:

Sri Lanka, along with Pakistan and Netherlands, has four points from six games in the tournament. Do Sri Lanka still have a chance of qualifying?

“With four points from six games, Sri Lanka are on the same boat as Pakistan and Netherlands. The situation is dire, but they aren’t completely out of it yet. Mathematically, it’s still possible that two teams finish on 12 or more points, and as many as seven teams end up on eight, fighting for two spots.” ESPN Cricinfo reported.

“That means Sri Lanka, who can still finish on 10 points, are in the mix, as are Pakistan and Netherlands. However, given how poorly they’ve played so far, and that two of their three remaining games are against India and New Zealand, the chances of them progressing are rather slim.” Cricinfo report added.

Still to play: India (2 November), Bangladesh (6 November), New Zealand (9 November)
