THREE MORE CASES OF OMRICON VARIANT OF COVID -19 DETECTED IN SRI LANKA

Another three cases of the Omicron variant of COVID-19 have been detected in Sri Lanka, the Health Ministry confirmed yesterday.

These new cases have been detected during tests conducted at the Medical Research Institute (MRI). With these new cases the total number of cases of the Omicron variant of COVID-19 detected in Sri Lanka has increased to seven.

Speaking to the media yesterday at the Health Promotion Bureau, MRI’s Consultant Virologist Dr. Jude Jayamaha said two of the cases are recent arrivals from Sudan while the other individual had arrived in the country from Tanzania.

They are aged, 33, 35 and 47 years and arrived in the island on December 16 and 20.

Health authorities has warned the number of individuals who contract the Omicron variant is likely to increase since it has already spread rapidly around the world. Sri Lanka reported its first Omicron infected individual earlier this month.
