Captain of the Sri Lanka World Cup team Kusal Mendis displayed his sporting pedigree on yet another occasion as he smashed a glass door at the home of rival team Bloomfield while playing for the Sinhalese Sports Club following his dismissal for a ‘duck’ at an inter club match on Friday that brought into question the morality among players.

But with a history of reckless behaviour, Mendis given the absence of values and integrity among cricket officials running the administration at Sri Lanka Cricket is not expected to be taken to task.

He has already been named as the captain of the Sri Lanka team for a home series against Zimbabwe starting next month and his predecessor Dasun Shanaka who also plays for the same SSC team unable to stomach Mendis’ contagious conduct hugged Bloomfield manager Ramesh Joseph and apologized to him.

Bloomfield lodged a complaint with Sri Lanka Cricket and SSC through the match referee and an official of the Reid Avenue Club said they were expecting action against Mendis.

“The attitudes of Sri Lanka cricketers must change and it cannot be tolerated any longer. We provide them with the comforts of our dressing room and this is what we get in return. We hope Sri Lanka Cricket will do their part, there is so much evidence”, an official of Bloomfield told the Sunday Observer.

Bloomfield won the match by 15 runs and Mendis lasted just two balls at the crease unable to negotiate a ball from left arm spinner Jeffery Vandersay with the delivery edged into the hands of first slip to spark off the rage.

Sri Lanka Cricket by retaining the stop-gap captain Mendis to lead the team suggests he could get away scot-free.

By escaping drastic or deterrent punishment on two previous occasions for breach of discipline, Mendis has acquired for himself a spoilt brat reputation after his super luxury vehicle fatally ran over an elderly cyclist in 2020 and a year later violated a nighttime curfew and healthcare Covid 19 pandemic regulation on a Sri Lanka tour of England.

A disciplinary Probe Committee recommended the serial offender be banned for two years but Sri Lanka Cricket’s notoriety in turning a blind eye to disciplinary violations, with so many skeletons in their own cupboards and life inside glass houses to safeguard, Mendis returned after serving just seven months, a mere kindergarten warning.
