The parliamentary services of All Ceylon Makkal Congress (ACMC) MP Ali Sabri Raheem has been suspended for a period of 01 month from today.
Deputy Speaker Ajith Rajapakshe informed the Parliament today that MP Ali Sabri Raheem has been suspended from Parliament following the recommendations of the Committee on Ethics and Privileges.
A resolution proposing the suspension of the Puttalam District MP from parliamentary proceedings was approved by the MPs during today’s proceedings.
The move comes after MP Raheem was detained by Sri Lanka Customs officials with undeclared gold and electronic equipment upon his arrival at the Katunayake Airport from Dubai in May last year.
MP Ali Sabri Raheem was found to be in possession of undeclared gold, weighing over 3 kilograms, which was valued at Rs. 74 million and 91 smartphones, which were in his luggage, valued at more than Rs. 4.2 million.
The MP was fined Rs. 7.5 million and released on payment of same while the undeclared gold and mobile phones were confiscated.
