FORMER PRESIDENT ENDORSES THE LAST OPTION OF PEOPLE TO TAKE TO STREETS

People have no option but to take to the streets – former President

“The people have no option but to get onto the streets. They carry so many problems in their head and they don’t know what to do. Today there are many issues in this country including food. During the last two years the government never consulted us when making decisions,” said former President Maithripala Sirisena.

He was addressing a delegates’ convention of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party in the Badulla District organized by the Minister of Labor Nimal Siripala de Silva and the Badulla District Parliamentarian Chamara Sampath Dasanayake at the Badulla Library Auditorium. He added that with the increase in fuel prices, the masses are rejecting politicians and resorting to mass protests.

He further said, “When this government was formed by 13 parties I was also appointed as the chairman but after that I was not involved in anything. After the Sirimavo Bandaranaike era, only my government brought the right policy to this country. I took the country on a path of democracy and many countries supported me. I brought the 19th Amendment and established democracy. Although my intention was to establish a corruption free country, I could not do that. Even the Colombo urban population are starving. They have no fuel, gas, electricity and are helpless. There are protests all over and the entire country is in tears. These people don’t understand these.”
