DECISION TO MANUFACTURE NUMBER PLATES LOCALLY AT A FACTORY IN KOLONNAWA

Number plates to be made in SL

The Ministry of Urban Development and Housing has stated that it has been decided to manufacture vehicle number plates locally at a factory in Kolonnawa.

The decision had been taken on the directives of Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa, to save Forex reserves of the country, the ministry added.

The contract to import parts for vehicle number plates, which is currently in operation through a local private company, is due to expire in 2024 and the Department of Government Factory intends to manufacture these number plate parts locally from then onwards.

According to the data and statistics of the Department of Motor Traffic, around 500,000 vehicles are registered in the country every year. Accordingly, the government points out that around Rs. 600 million spent overseas each year can be retained in the country with this endevour.
