IMPEACHMENT –NO FAITH MOTION AGAINST PRESIDENT AND PRIME MINISTER COMMENCED IN PARLIAMENT

Impeachment against President; No-faith motion against PM

A process of collecting signatures for an impeachment motion against the President and a no-confidence motion against the government, commenced in Parliament from yesterday (08).

According to internal sources, getting signatures of the Samagi Jana Balawegaya MPs have neared completion and obtaining signatures of other MPs who are currently sitting in opposition benches as well as those who are currently functioning as independent MPs are to take place in the next few days, reports say.

It is said that signatures will be obtained for the no-confidence motion first as it is the motion that requires the least number of signatures.

In order to table a no confidence motion, either signatures of the 2/3 of parliamentarians or the signatures of 1/2 of the MPs and the Speaker is sufficient.

Leader of the Opposition – Sajith Premadasa has moved a motion calling for the removal of the current government and the President in a democratic and constitutional manner.
