Helmets compulsory for riot squads! 
IGP C.D. Wickramaratne has informed all HQIs and all OICs that all officers of riot police deployed to quell public protests, agitations and rallies must wear anti-riot helmets, it is reported.
The IGP also said that some police stations did not have adequate anti-riot helmets and instructed the officers to wear at least the white traffic safety helmets in such instances.
The IGP also instructed police officers to be allowed to wear white or black security helmets with their uniforms in instances where they do not have adequate anti-riot helmets or white traffic safety helmets.
The IGP emphasized that this provision should only be used when deploying officers for riot control and to disperse illegal gatherings or to ensure their safety while on duty, but should not be used instead for other duties.
