Sumanthiran tipped for the post of Deputy Speaker
Following the resignation of Ranjith Siyambalapitiya as the Deputy Speaker of the House, an election is to be held to appoint a suitable successor to the post, Parliamentary sources say.
Although Dilan Perera has been tipped for the position by the government, the MP has said that he will only run for the post if he can be elected unopposed.However, it is reported that the Opposition is also preparing to field a candidate for the post of Deputy Speaker.
If this happens, Dilan Perera will not contest.Meanwhile, a group of MPs is also backing President’s Counsel M.A. Sumanthiran for the position, reports say.
