Japanese ambassador’s commendation presented to local demining NGOs

Ambassador’s Commendation was presented to Mr. Ananda Chandrasiri, Director / Program Manager of Delvon Assistance for Social Harmony, DASH and Mr. Sarath Jayawardhana, Director/Programme Manager of Skavita Humanitarian Assistance and Relief Project, SHARP, by Mr. Mizukoshi Hideaki, Ambassador of Japan to Sri Lanka on May 12 at Ambassador’s residence.

DASH and SHARP are Local NGOs which have been working on humanitarian demining activities in the conflict-affected areas of the Northern and Eastern Provinces through the Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects (GGP) funded by the Government of Japan.

Mr. Chandrasiri and Mr. Jayawardhana have been making efforts to contribute to the promotion of mutual understanding and friendship between Japan and Sri Lanka, not only through demining operations, but also by promoting resettlement and reconciliation among ethnic groups through various activities to ensure peace and stability in the war-affected area.

Kalutara tuition teacher remanded over sexual abuse

The private tution teacher who was arrested for allegedly sexually abusing 16 school girls in Kalutara has been remanded.

He has been remanded until May 26.

The Police Media Division said the private tuition class teacher was arrested yesterday (11), when he arrived to record a statement at the Kalutara Child and Women Abuse Prevention Bureau.

The incident came to light following a complaint lodged by the wife of the accused tuition class teacher.

The woman had lodged a complaint with the Kalutara-North Police accusing her husband of being involved in extramarital affairs.

She had claimed that during an inspection of her husband’s laptop, she had found video recordings of the tuition class teacher sexually abusing school girls.

Milk powder importers to slash prices

The price of a kilogramme of imported milk powder will be reduced by Rs. 200 with effect from May 15, Trade Minister Nalin Fernando said.

He said the new prices will be officially announced by May 15.
The Minister added the decision was reached following talks with milk powder importers.

New law for inter-provincial buses from May 15

The inter-provincial long-distance buses will be permitted to stop only at bus halts with a yellow-colored signboard from May 15, the National Transport Commission (NTC) said.

NTC Director General Nilan Miranda said a pilot program in this regard was held from Galle to Gintota on the Galle corridor to minimise the conflicts between the inter-provincial long-distance bus services and provincial bus services when picking up passengers at certain bus stops.

Accordingly, the NTC has identified 37 bus stops for inter-provincial long-distance buses from Galle to Gintota on the Galle corridor, he said.

The announcement was made while addressing the media at the Government Information Department while launching the pilot program. Addressing the media, NTC Director of Planning Ms. K.A.C. Karunarathna said yellow color sign boards are displayed along with black sign boards.

“Both the provincial and inter-provincial long-distance bus services are permitted to stop at the bus stops where the yellow-colored signboards are displayed. Inter-provincial long-distance buses are not permitted to stop at the bus tops with black sign boards,” she said.

Accordingly, inter-provincial long-distance buses will be permitted only at yellow colored bus stops from May 15.

“Legal action will be taken against the inter-provincial long-distance buses that do not stop at the permitted bus stops as per the prevailing law. This directive will be included as a criterion in the route permit of the NTC, and internal disciplinary action will be taken against those buses that violate this,” Ms. Karunarathna said.
