Sri Lanka gets direct qualification for Women’s WC
Sri Lanka has secured direct qualification for the Women’s Cricket World Cup which will be held next year in India.
This marks a significant achievement for the team led by Chamari Athapaththu as it is the first time since 2008 that they have qualified directly for the women’s ODI World Cup.
Australia have won 18 matches from 24 having 39 points on top of the points table while England have won 15 out of 24 is in second slot having 32 points. India having won 13 out of 19 matches with 27 points in third place while South Africa 25 points with 12 wins in 24 matches and Sri Lanka having 22 points from 9 wins in 24 matches have got direct qualification to the World Cup.
Sri Lanka’s qualification became certain after Australia’s series win against New Zealand as no two teams could surpass them in their remaining fixtures. Sri Lanka team with 22 points from 24 matches now assured of automatic spot for the World Cup.
Sri Lanka team had huge challenge in the recently concluded T -20 World Cup held in UAE where they failed to win a single match. They entered the T-20 World Cup after winning Asia Cup but their expectations were dashed at the T-20 World Cup. Sri Lanka’s recent performance of the ODI helped them to get direct qualification for the World Cup and now they have big task to prove their performance at the forthcoming world cup in India .
Sri Lanka women’s team recently showed their good batting skills and they have to improve their bowling to face tough teams during the next World Cup. Skipper Chamari Athapaththu is the key player having more experience while lasses like Harshitha Samarawickrama, Vishmi Gunaratne, Kavisha Dilhari also had decent series recently and their middle order was not upto expectations which resulted in them losing to top opponent teams. World cup is the major tournament and Sri Lanka has to rectify their mistakes to go forward. They beat New Zealand, South Africa, England and also India recently and their effort under the guidance of coach Rumesh Ratnayake was very high and once again they have to face big challenge.
The next world cup is scheduled to be held in August – September 2025 in which eight teams will be take part and five teams already got direct qualification. New Zealand, Bangladesh, Pakistan, West Indies and Ireland are fighting for the other three slots of the World Cup.
Australia are the defending champions having previously won their 7th title in 2022.
Earlier 1978,1997 and 2013 India hosted the world cup and they are ready to host fourth time next year while best eight teams will via for the global event conducted by ICC.
