X-Press Pearl: Wreck removal process has commenced
The Marine Environment Protection Authority says preliminary work to remove the X-Press Pearl wreck has commenced.
Speaking to NewsRadio, MEPA Chairperson Dharshani Lahandapura said the two special vessels that arrived in the area to remove the wreck are expected to lift the X-Press Pearl using iron rods.
Lahandapura said six metal bars out 63 have been placed underneath the shipwreck and noted that it is a very complicated process.
She said however all salvage activities are expected to be carried out in a manner that minimizes environmental damage.
The MEPA Chairperson said the ship owners had assigned two companies for the salvage operation, one American and one Chinese.
Lahandapura said over 80% of the debris removal process has been completed thus far.
