A second sub lineage of the COVID-19 Delta variant has been detected in Sri Lanka and it has been assigned as B.1.617.2.104, Jayewardhanapura University’s Dr. Chandima Jeewandara said.
Accordingly, the Delta variants in Sri Lanka now have two Sri Lanka-originated unique sub lineages, the B.1.617.2.28 being the first such sub lineage.
Dr.Jeewandara further said that with the new sub lineage, Sri Lanka has three SARS-CoV-2 variants that originated in Sri Lanka, the first one being B.411. It is a lineage of the ancestral SARS-CoV-2 virus.
The Coronavirus disease also known as COVID-19 is an infectious disease caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus.
