New Speaker to be elected Tuesday after Asoka Ranwala resigns
Parliament will elect a new Speaker on Tuesday following the resignation of Asoka Ranwala, who stepped down amid controversy over the authenticity of his educational qualifications.
Ranwala resigned after serving only 22 days, marking the shortest tenure for a Speaker in Sri Lanka’s history. He maintains that no false statements were made and has pledged to provide the required certificates in the future.
The President formally accepted Ranwala’s resignation, as confirmed by the Secretary General of Parliament. This follows constitutional requirements under Article 64(2), which mandates written notification to the President for such resignations.
