AG WARNS SPEAKER TO COMPLY WITH SC DECISION ON IGP

Comply with SC decision on IGP; AG tells Speaker

The Attorney General has informed the Speaker of the Parliament Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena, to comply with the recent Supreme Court decision concerning the Inspector General of Police (IGP).

The move comes after the Speaker sought advice from the Attorney General’s office in response to the ongoing matter.

The Attorney General’s Department has taken steps to prepare a comprehensive advisory report related to the IGP issue.

The report aims to guide the Speaker on how to proceed in light of the recent legal developments.

However, Speaker Abeywardena has made it clear that he will not engage in discussions with the Chief Justice regarding the matter.

According to him, there is no legal basis for such discussions, and he will not enter into negotiations on the matter.

The Supreme Court recently issued an interim injunction preventing Deshabandu Tennakoon from serving as the Inspector General of Police.

In response, the President has called for dialogue between the Chief Justice and the Speaker to resolve the issue promptly.
