Wil convert if electric trishaws are provided under installment schemes – AITWDU
The All-Island Three-Wheeler Drivers’ Union (AITWDU) has said that they are willing to convert their three wheelers running on fossil fuel to electric ones if the government provides electric three-wheelers under installment schemes.
AITWDU President Lalith Dharmasekera said the electric three-wheelers will be able to re-charge from sunlight. The maintenance is very low. Therefore, the association is hoping that the government will provide an installment payment scheme for the initial payment to continue with the service, he said.
“Now we are getting five litres of petrol for three-wheelers per week. After we convert our three-wheelers to electric, there will be no need for fuel,” he had further said.
Earlier today, Cabinet spokesman minister Bandula Gunawardena said that Cabinet approval has been granted to amend the Motor Vehicles Act to allow the registration of Electric three-wheelers in Sri Lanka.
The government says it has received multiple requests from various parties seeking permission for the registration of electric three-wheelers in the country to promote the use of electric vehicles in order to minimize the consumption of fossil fuels.
