Bomb at Pakistan political rally kills at least 40
At least 40 people have been killed in an explosion in Pakistan during a rally organised by an Islamist party.
Dozens of people were also injured in the explosion in north-west Bajaur district, where Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI) was holding a meeting.
Authorities have cordoned off the area and have warned the death toll is likely to rise further.
A rescue operation to assist the injured is ongoing and police have not yet confirmed the cause of the blast.Images being broadcast on local TV show ambulances ferrying injured people to hospitals in the Pakistani tribal district of Bajaur, in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province near the border with Afghanistan.Some badly injured people have been waiting in the hallways of health clinics struggling to cope with the high number of casualties.The authorities have declared a health emergency at the district hospital.A regional leader of the JUI, Maulana Ziaullah, was killed in the blast, local officials have said.

Deputy Leader of the United National Party (UNP) Ruwan Wijewardene said his party will likely form an alliance to face upcoming elections.
“A number of opposition MPs have indicated their willingness to join the President,” he said.
Wijewardene added that the year 2024 will be a year of elections.
A 20-year-old person has reportedly been killed following a shooting incident in the Martis Lane area of Keselwatta.
Two unidentified gunmen on a motorcycle had opened fire at the youth, who was waiting on the side of the road this evening (July 30), before fleeing the scene of the crime, the police mentioned.
The youth has succumbed to his injuries after being admitted to Colombo National Hospital, the police said.
The deceased has been identified as a resident of Colombo 12.
At least 14 passengers have been injured and hospitalised due to a road accident involving a private passenger bus travelling from Colombo to Monaragala in the Galahitiya area on the Ratnapura – Embilipitiya this morning (30).
The accident has taken place after the bus overturned on the road between 5.00 a.m. to 6.00 a.m. this morning, as a result of the driver falling asleep on the wheel.
