Betting & gambling taxes to be increased
The draft bill to increase betting and gambling taxes has been gazette.According to the gazette issued by President Ranil Wickremesinghe as the Minister of Finance, the US$ 50 fee charged from a Sri Lankan to enter a gambling centre has been increased to US$ 100.
Meanwhile, each individual operating a betting centre must register the establishment with the Inland Revenue Department within one month from the date of commencement.It has also been proposed to revise the amount of betting and gambling tax to be paid annually. The annual tax charged from betting centres has been increased to 5 million rupees starting from April 1.
In case of using live television broadcasting facilities, the amount of tax that is being charged has been increased to one million rupees from Rs. 600,000.

Former Attorney General Dappula de Livera has been informed to appear before the Terrorism Investigation Division (TID) tomorrow to record a statement he had made over the 2019 Easter Sunday bomb attacks.
Police said he was informed to appear before the TID to record a statement regarding his controversial statement of a coup behind the Easter Sunday attacks.
Meanwhile, Justice Minister Dr. Wijeyadasa Rajapakshe also said at a Cabinet briefing that he has informed the Attorney General to record a statement from Dappula de Livera over his statement on the Easter Sunday terror attacks.
In May 2021, a few days before the end of his tenure as the AG, Dappula de Livera said that he is unable to present indictments against the conspirators and abettors of the 2019 Easter Sunday terror attacks within his tenure as the Criminal Investigation Department’s probes are incomplete.
Speaking to the media, the Justice Minister said that Dappula de Livera as the Attorney General at the time should have summoned the Police and ordered them to conduct further investigations if the level of inquiry had been insufficient.
Sri Lanka Police have been called before the Committee on Public Accounts (COPA) on April 26, 2023, COPA Chairman Lasantha Alagiyawanna said.
They have been summoned to examine the Auditor General’s reports and current performance.
Meanwhile, the Department of Samurdhi Development too has been summoned before the COPA on April 25, 2023, to look into matters based on the reports of the Auditor General relating to the previous years and the current performance.
The Cabinet has approved a proposal to only allow the public to roam freely and hold religious activities at Galle Face Green with effect from April 20.
Accordingly, musical performances, political meetings or other activities that could harm the ground will be prohibited at the Galle Face Green.
The Sri Lanka Ports Authority (SLPA) has accepted the task of conducting a corporate social responsibility (CSR) programme and has already spent Rs. 220 million to carry out development programmes at the Galle Face Green.
However, Rs. 6.6 million had been spent on the repairs carried out to the Galle Face Green due to damages caused during the ‘Aragalaya’ period.
