BASL shares concerns on draft 21A
The Bar Association of Sri Lanka (BASL) has expressed concern that several vital provisions which were found in the 19th Amendment which are not incorporated into the draft 21st Amendment.
“The Bar Association of Sri Lanka has expressed concern that whilst the 21st Amendment to the Constitution will restore the provisions of the previous 19th Amendment to the Constitution regarding the Constitutional Council and the Independent Commissions, there are several vital provisions which were found in the 19th Amendment which are not incorporated into the draft 21st Amendment.”
In a letter to the President Gotabaya Rajapaksa, the BASL has raised their concerns as follows :
Meanwhile, the Prime minister’s media had stated that the 21st Amendment to the Constitution was presented to the Cabinet after a meeting of the Constitution Amendment drafting committee held this evening at the Prime Minister’s office.’The Cabinet took the decision to distribute copies of the amendment amongst the Parliament Party Leaders for their observations. This will be discussed on Friday (27). Following this, the amendment will be sent back to Cabinet for final approval,’ the PM’s media unit stated.
