CBSL destroys defaced bank notes
The Central Bank of Sri Lanka has destroyed 238.5 million damaged or defaced currency notes last year.
According to the Central Bank, the destroyed notes in 2022 were worth Rs. 207.3 billion.
The Central Bank periodically destroys defaced currency notes to ensure the circulation of clean and quality notes in the country.
The Central Bank in 2021 had destroyed 108.2 million currency notes worth Rs. 44.3 billion while in 2020, 127.3 million defaced currency notes worth Rs. 62.2 billion rupees had been destroyed.
Furthermore, in 2019, 235 million currency notes worth Rs.139.8 billion had been destroyed by the Central Bank.
A total of 343.8 million defaced currency notes were destroyed in 2018 and according to the Central Bank the value of the notes taken out of circulation was Rs. 252.2 billion.
