People’s Bank in danger! ; Depositors continue to withdraw money
The heads of all government corporations and departments have informed the Ministry of Finance that they will immediately transfer the existing accounts at the People’s Bank to other banks, the state-owned ‘Dinamina’ newspaper reported.
In addition, many businessmen have also informed President Ranil Wickremesinghe as the Minister of Finance that they will have to withdraw their accounts from the People’s Bank.
They have informed the President that they would take this decision with regret since their businesses may be affected if protests and strikes continue to hamper the performance of the bank.
The heads of corporations and departments have informed President Wickremesinghe that they had to face many inconveniences since the employees of the People’s Bank also joined the strike on Wednesday (15).
The heads of public corporations and departments have explained to the Ministry of Finance that the employees could not withdraw money for their needs, and therefore the clients were inconvenienced by having to find alternatives.
Therefore, they have requested the Finance Ministry to take necessary steps to remove their accounts from the People’s Bank and transfer them to other banks.
Meanwhile, President Wickremesinghe has informed the relevant authorities at the Finance Ministry yesterday (16) to pay special attention to the request made by the heads of government corporations and departments.

However, the President’s Media Division quoted People’s Bank Acting CEO/GM Clive Fonseka and said that 272 Branches out of the 340 were fully functional with attendance reported at over 75% as at 10.30 AM on the 15th.
Depositors withdraw money
Meanwhile, economic experts pointed out that due to this situation, the customers of People’s Bank will probably be tempted to withdraw their money from the bank.

It is reported that importers are again facing difficulties after the cancellation of Gazette No. 2014/10 by Minister Nimal Siripala de Silva.
Importers claim that in this backdrop, shipping companies will be able to arbitrarily charge 40 other types of fees in addition to shipping fees.
This gazette, which was published on October 17, 2017 by the then subject minister – Mahinda Samarasinghe, was in place to protect importers and exporters from the fees charged arbitrarily by the shipping companies.
Thereby, all the charges related to loading, unloading, warehousing, etc. were initially paid by the shipping company and specific figures had to be announced.
However, after revoking the gazette, importers will have to bear all charges while it also creates a loophole to increase charges at will, finally putting that burden on the consumer.

The maker of athletic apparel has announced it will stop using kangaroo skins for its shoes this year, ending a controversial practice.
The move comes weeks after a similar decision from German rival Puma.
Nike said it will be using a proprietary synthetic material that replaces the use of kangaroo leather.
In a statement issued on Monday, Nike will be using the material when it debuts a new line of Tiempo football boots, called the Tiempo Legend Elite.
The line is set to launch this summer.
The company ended its partnership with its only kangaroo leather supplier in 2021.
The decision from Nike and Puma to end the use of kangaroo skin in their football boots comes as a big win for animal welfare activists, who have urged companies to drop unethical practices involving animal cruelty.
“Nike’s announcement is a seismic event in wildlife protection, and tremors will be felt all over the world, especially in Australia where the mass commercial slaughter of kangaroos occurs,” said Wayne Pacelle, president of the Center for a Humane Economy.
The group is behind the campaign “Kangaroos Are Not Shoes,” which it announced in 2020, and has been key instrumental to introducing legislation banning the import and sale of kangaroo products.
A growing generation of younger, environmentally conscious shoppers have also pressed for more sustainability from clothing companies.
California has not allowed products made from kangaroos to be sold or imported into the state since 1971.
