Dr. Chamil Wijesinghe, Media Spokesperson of the Government Medical Officers’ Association stated that nearly five thousand more doctors will meet the necessary qualifications to go abroad.
He noted that once they go for that training, the medical shortage will further worsen.
The Ministry of Health says that steps have been taken to provide many facilities for the consultants who are rehired on contract basis.
Its Deputy Director General of Health Services, Dr. G. Wijesuriya said that about 400 consultant doctors have left the country in the past.
He also said that there are currently vacancies of nearly 500 consultant doctors.
