The Chinese research vessel Shi Yan 6 will commence marine research off the west coast from today.
According to a spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, permission has been granted for the Chinese vessel to conduct research in seas off the western coast for 48 hours under supervision.
The Sri Lanka Navy is expected to monitor the activities of the vessel.
Permission has been granted despite concerns raised by India for many months as authorities believe the vessel could be used for spying on Indian activities.
