Sanath Nishantha suspended from Parliament for a fortnight
The State Minister of Water Supply Sanath Nishantha was suspended from Parliament sessions for two weeks from today (22).
Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardane said he suspended MP Nishatha for his unruly behaviour in Parliament yesterday (21).
The Speaker told Parliament that he took the decision in terms of the powers vested in him under Standing Order 14.
Parliamentary proceedings yesterday (21) were delayed for a few minutes, due to chaos in the house following a statement made by Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa.
The Opposition Leader raised a question on the Supreme Court ruling on Sri Lanka’s bankruptcy, which cited that fundamental rights were violated through economic decisions taken from 2019-2022.
MPs from the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna protested against the statement and MP Sanath Nishantha was seen taking away the document containing the opposition leader’s statement.

Police have initiated an investigation into an incident where a school Principal had forced several students to put the polythene and newspaper wrappings used to wrap their meals, in their mouths.
The incident is reported from the Rambukpitiya Central College in Nawalapitiya.
Two students who had fallen ill afterwards, have been admitted to the Nawalapitiya District Hospital with symptoms of upset stomachs and vomiting, reports add.
The students had wrapped their meals thus, ignoring advice to avoid polythene wrappings. Citing the police complaint filed by the students’ parents in this regard, the police say that the wrappings were discovered by the Principal, who had forced the students to put them in their mouth.

NPP MP Anura Kumara Dissanayake who called for the division said his party decided to call for a division as it is not proper for Parliament to allocate funds for former Presidents Gotabaya Rajapaksa and Mahinda Rajapaksa who have been held responsible for the economic downturn.
