Presidents are not kings – Saliya Pieris

Former President of the Bar Association of Sri Lanka (BASL) – President’s Counsel Saliya Peiris has criticized Prime Minister – Dinesh Gunawardena’s statement made in parliament today (July 26).

He emphasized that the claim by the Government that the Constitutional Council is not subject to the jurisdiction of the Supreme Court is not true.

Peiris made these remarks during a press briefing of the Lawyers’ Collective later in the today.

He also said that the Presidents of the land are not kings and a President cannot take decisions in such an arbitrary manner.

Noting that the Supreme Court was empowered by the constitution, he also pointed out that the IGP will open himself for a contempt charge in due time if he did continue to work in his position, disregarding the SC decision.
