27 lankans to return home after rescued from Myanmar cybercrime camps
The Sri Lankan government has repatriated 27 nationals, including eight women, who were held in a human trafficking camp in Myanmar.
The group returned this afternoon on SriLankan Airlines flight UL 405, which landed at Katunayake. Authorities escorted the individuals to their homes under special security arrangements.
The victims had been trapped in illegal cybercrime operations linked to human trafficking networks. Officials report that 14 Sri Lankans remain in similar camps in Myanmar, with efforts underway to secure their release. Foreign Affairs Minister Vijitha Herath has instructed authorities to expedite their rescue.
The government launched coordinated efforts involving Sri Lankan and Thai diplomatic missions, Myanmar and Thai authorities, and international organizations. Ven. Maligawila Assaji Thero, representing the victims’ families, also supported the operation.
Since November 1, 2024, the government has repatriated 63 Sri Lankans from trafficking camps in Myanmar. This includes 32 individuals brought home on November 25. Earlier this year, eight and 20 individuals were rescued in April and August, respectively.
