FUEL GAS SHORTAGES MAY CAUSE GOVERNMENT HOSPITAL SERVICES TO CRIPPLE

Govt. hospitals can function only for another week

A situation has arisen where government hospitals would have to close down in another week due to the shortage of gas, fuel and essential medicines, said Dr. Rukshan Bellana, Chairman of the Government Medical Officers’ Forum.

In an interview with the Divaina newspaper Dr. Bellana said that due to the shortage of fuel, doctors and health staff are facing difficulties reporting for work at present.

Further, the acute shortage of gas has created difficulties in supplying meals to the patients and staff.

He further noted that several hospital canteens, including the Kalubowila Hospital canteen has been closed due to the unavailability of gas and warned that this situation could aggravate in about another week.
Dr. Bellana also said that apart from all these issues, the most serious issue is the lack of drugs within hospitals to treat patients. Therefore, he cautioned that if these issues are not resolved expeditiously, the entire hospital network would have to be closed down before long.
