Sri Lanka Customs officials at Bandaranaike International Airport today (14) arrested a woman who arrived from Chennai, India for smuggling gold into the country.
A search of the woman’s luggage had revealed carefully hidden cache of gold, including 24-carat necklaces, rings and bracelets, 27 24-carat gold plates concealed as credit cards and 8 capsules containing liquid gold.
The total weight of the gold plates was 4892 grams and its market value was estimated at over Rs. 111 million. The 8 capsules found contained 2222 grams of gold powder prepared as a solution, the value of those are still being calculated.
The arrested suspect is a 30-year-old woman from Gampaha. She had reportedly started her journey from Dubai and boarded flight bound to Colombo at 1:45 am.
