SL to import rice for festive season
Cabinet approval has been granted to import Keeri Samba and Samba rice.
Speaking at the Cabinet briefing held today (21), Minister Bandula Gunawardena said that the measure has been taken to meet the increased demand that is anticipated to take place during the upcoming festive season.
The minister added that Cabinet approval had been granted to import 100,000MT of Keeri Samba or Samba rice.

US Petroleum products distributor – RM Parks Inc. has signed a USD 110 million worth agreement with the Board of Investment to bring Shell products to Sri Lanka.
The collaboration between RM Parks Inc. and Shell will operate 200 fuel stations and provide services of mini-supermarkets with EV charging facilities, the BOI says.
The Coconut Development Board has decided to establish a new coconut triangle by planting 100,000 coconut saplings in Hambantota district.
Accordingly, the establishment of this new coconut triangle centered on the areas of Ranna, Weerakatiya and Walasmulla is currently being carried out with arrangements being made to provide 05 coconut saplings per household to the farmers for planting coconut saplings in their home gardens.
The distribution of coconut saplings to the farmers for this new coconut triangle was done in the last two days under the participation of the Minister of Agriculture and Plantation Industries, Mahinda Amaraweera.
The total daily consumption of coconuts is around 4.5 million nuts, the daily production of coconuts is around 03 million nuts. For this reason, Minister Amaraweera, has instructed the National Coconut Development Board to implement a program to motivate the people to cultivate coconut cultivation in every home garden that has space.
In addition, steps have been taken to provide coconut saplings to the farmers of those seven villages in relation to the Youth Agri Entrepreneurship Village Program currently operating in 07 villages of Hambantota district.
In August, Minister of Industries – Ramesh Pathirana had said that the 2nd Coconut Triangle would be established in the North, centering around Jaffna, Mannar and Mullaitivu.

A cabinet decision has been taken allowing the government to take over all sugar stocks imported under a special commodity levy of 25 cents per kilogramme and sell them within a month at a Maximum Retail Price of Rs. 275.
The decision had been announced today (20) by Minister of Trade – Nalin Fernando.
Speaking, the Minister had said that these sugar stocks would be sold at Sathosa outlets, supermarkets and selected Cooperative outlets.
He had said that the objective of this is to eliminate a sugar shortage and release stocks to the local market.
Noting that the Consumer Affairs Authority are currently counting out the relevant stocks, the minister added that measures will be taken to obtain stocks from importers and wholesalers from today onwards.
With these measures in place, stocks imported under the increased special commodity levy can be sold afterwards at a new price, the minister had further said.
A day after the government increased the special commodity levy imposed on a kilogram of imported sugar to Rs. 50 on Nov. 02, an MRP for sugar was announced via an Extraordinary Gazette.
