Cattle thieves on the rise in Gampaha!

 

At least six or seven cows are being stolen each day in Gampaha District, agricultural authorities said.

The cows usually produce 15-30 liters of milk per day and it has been reported that at least 35-40 cows are being stolen every month in Gampaha District alone.

The provincial agricultural officials presented the facts regarding the increase in cattle theft in the Western Province during a discussion chaired by Minister of Agriculture Mahinda Amaraweera,It was revealed that thieves coming in luxury vans steal cows at night. Agricultural officials said that cattle theft is increasing in other parts of the country as well.

In response, Minister Amaraweera instructed the Secretary of the Ministry to send a letter to the Inspector General of Police and the Minister of State for Defense requesting them to increase night patrolling, vehicle inspection and also to increase the punishment given to cattle thieves by the Police.The officials said that there is a possibility of a milk shortage in the future due to the daily theft of cows.It was also revealed during the discussion that dairy farmers have spent a colossal amount of money to install CCTV cameras in some farms for the safety of cows.

TID summons former AG Dappula de Livera

Former Attorney General Dappula de Livera has been informed to appear before the Terrorism Investigation Division (TID) tomorrow to record a statement he had made over the 2019 Easter Sunday bomb attacks.

Police said he was informed to appear before the TID to record a statement regarding his controversial statement of a coup behind the Easter Sunday attacks.

Meanwhile, Justice Minister Dr. Wijeyadasa Rajapakshe also said at a Cabinet briefing that he has informed the Attorney General to record a statement from Dappula de Livera over his statement on the Easter Sunday terror attacks.

In May 2021, a few days before the end of his tenure as the AG, Dappula de Livera said that he is unable to present indictments against the conspirators and abettors of the 2019 Easter Sunday terror attacks within his tenure as the Criminal Investigation Department’s probes are incomplete.

Speaking to the media, the Justice Minister said that Dappula de Livera as the Attorney General at the time should have summoned the Police and ordered them to conduct further investigations if the level of inquiry had been insufficient.

Police summoned before COPA

Sri Lanka Police have been called before the Committee on Public Accounts (COPA) on April 26, 2023, COPA Chairman Lasantha Alagiyawanna said.

They have been summoned to examine the Auditor General’s reports and current performance.

Meanwhile, the Department of Samurdhi Development too has been summoned before the COPA on April 25, 2023, to look into matters based on the reports of the Auditor General relating to the previous years and the current performance.

Govt. bans public rallies & musical performances at Galle Face Green

The Cabinet has approved a proposal to only allow the public to roam freely and hold religious activities at Galle Face Green with effect from April 20.

Accordingly, musical performances, political meetings or other activities that could harm the ground will be prohibited at the Galle Face Green.

The Sri Lanka Ports Authority (SLPA) has accepted the task of conducting a corporate social responsibility (CSR) programme and has already spent Rs. 220 million to carry out development programmes at the Galle Face Green.

However, Rs. 6.6 million had been spent on the repairs carried out to the Galle Face Green due to damages caused during the ‘Aragalaya’ period.
