IN MEMORY OF MANGALA LAUNCH OF “VAYAMA”

“Vayama’ launch tomorrow in memory of Mangala

 

The second year remembrance of former Minister – Mangala Samaraweera will be marked with the launch of the book ‘Vayama’ written by Sujith Akkarawatte tomorrow (Aug. 24).

The launch will be held at 3.30pm at the Lakshman Kadirgamar Centre in Colombo.The book will be presented to Mrs. Manel Ananthan, aunt of the late Mr. Samaraweera. Mrs. Ananthan, who is also the widow of the late world record holding swimmer – Mr. V.K. Ananthan, is said to have been one of the most influential figures in the late Mr. Samaraweera’s life.  Speeches will be delivered on the occasion by Dr. Mahesh Hapugoda, Dr. R.H.S. Samaratunga, Krishantha Cooray and the author himself.

The event will be made colorful by singer Niranjala Manjari.

Euro Film Fest 2023 : Aug. 21 screenings

The final day (Aug. 21) of the European Film Festival 2023 will feature ‘Imad’s Childhood’ by Zahavi Sanjavi at 3.30pm and the closing film ‘Luxembourg, Luxembourg’ by Antonio Lukich at 6.00pm.

The films will be screened at the National Film Corporation cinema and admission will be free.

Imad’s Childhood  (2021, Sweden, Latvia, Iraq)

Synopsis : After more than two years in captivity with Isis, Yazidi Ghazala and her two small boys are released and return to Iraqi Kurdistan. Four year old Imad is explosively aggressive and his favorite pursuits are stoning rabbits and beheading dogs. With patience and respect, Zahavi Sanjavi has closely followed Imad and his traumatized family for several years. With the help of a teacher, Imad begins to take small steps to find his way back to a normal childhood.

Luxembourg, Luxembourg’ (2022, Ukraine)

Synopsis : Mykola and Vasya go in search of their father, who left them when they were children, after they come to know that he is dying in Luxembourg. Kolya considers him a hero, while Vasya thinks he is a scoundrel.

Euro Film Fest 2023 : Aug. 20 screenings

Day 5 (Aug. 20) of the European Film Festival 2023 will feature ‘Io sto bene’ by Donato Rotunno at 3.30pm and ‘Mitra’ by Kaweh Modiri at 6.00pm.

Io sto bene (2020, Luxemburg, Belgium, Germany)

Synopsis : Antonio has spent his whole life away from Italy, his home country. He crosses paths with Leo, a young Italian artist who is trying to make it abroad. The old man and the young woman’s destinies mirror each other. Memories from the past are awoken and end up offering a more peaceful future to the both of them.

Mitra (2021, Netherlands, Germany, Denmark)

Synopsis : 37 years after her daughter was executed in Iran, Haleh finds the woman who betrayed her. The traitor, now a loving mother herself and just arrived in the Netherlands, does not recognize Haleh and trusts her as an older and wiser countryman. While Haleh is plotting her revenge, she gets to know the perpetrator better than she would like to.

Gentle (2022, Hungary, Germany)

Synopsis : Edina, a female bodybuilder is ready to sacrifice everything for the dream she shares with her life partner and trainer Adam: to win the world championship. The odd love she finds on her way makes her see the difference between her dreams and her true self.

 

 

Shadow Country: (2020, Czech Republic, Slovakia)

Synopsis : Etienne, an often out of work but endearing actor, runs a theater workshop in a prison, where he brings together an unlikely troupe of prisoners to stage Samuel Beckett’s famous play Waiting for Godot. When he is allowed to take the colorful band of convicts on a tour outside of prison, Etienne finally has the chance to thrive.  Each date is a new success and a unique relationship grows between this ad hoc group of actors and their director. But soon comes the final performance in Paris. Will their last night together be the biggest hit of them all?
