The proposal to reduce the local government members from 8,719 to 4,000 will be submitted to Parliament immediately, Local Government State Minister Janaka Wakkambura said.

However, he said that the local government election will not be postponed based on this, and pointed out that the current local government electoral system does not reflect the real opinion of the public.
