MATHEWS AND CHAMEERA COMMENCE TRAINING

Mathews and Chameera train with Sri Lanka team

Sri Lanka team had their first training session yesterday evening at M. Chinnaswamy Cricket Stadium in Bangalore. Both travelling reserves Angelo Mathews and Dushmantha Chameera also trained to focus on the England game which is scheduled to be held on October 26 at the same venue.

A senior member of the team management said they are expecting Maheesh Theekshana’s MRI scan report to observe his condition of the injury. We hope Theekshana will be fit to play next game but that will depend on his Scan report and medical staff is waiting to give their decision on Maheesh Theekshana.

Sri Lanka team already has decided to send a letter to the ICC technical committee about Matheesha Pathirana’s present condition and they have plan to get replacement to Pathirana.

Sri Lanka team still not have decided on who is most suitable to replace Pathirana. The young Matheesha Pathirana once again aggravated his shoulder injury and was rested for last two games against Australia and Netherlands.

In the absence of Pathirana Sri Lanka named Lahiru Kumara for Australia game but he was not successful and gave away 44 runs in four overs without taking any wicket. But for the Netherlands game Sri Lanka replaced Kasun Rajitha for Lahiru Kumara and he was successful by taking four wicket haul and young Dilshan Madushanka already performing well from the other end was among the wickets and took his best ODI figures at the Netherlands game with a four wicket haul, the fast bowling coach Dharshana Gamage said.

Madushanka has to play the main part of the fast bowling unit. The fast bowlers Madushanka, Kasun Rajitha, Chamika Karunaratne and Lahiru Kumara are in the squad but Karunaratne and Kumara were not up to expectations.

Sri Lanka is trying to add either Angelo Mathews or Dushmantha Chameera after getting approval from the ICC technical committee. However we have two options to make bowling strength we should have Chameera but if we wanted to make batting strength we have to get Angelo Mathews, he said.

Mathews is seriously training batting and he is useful batter to strengthen middle order while Chameera the Sri Lanka key fast bowler of the white ball format came here after recovering from injury.

The team management wanted to see Chameera’s bowling progress after his come back.

Dushmantha Chameera played for B Love Kandy team in LPL while he couldn’t take part first round matches at Colombo and played Pallekele matches but once again out of the team due to injury. His fitness is the main issue.

Anyway we will decide who is suitable as Pathirana’s replacement in next two days before the England game.

Sri Lanka and England will meet at Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bangalore and this wicket is very favourable for batters and Sri Lanka wanted to strengthen their batting but they have an issue with bowlers which is a headache for Sri Lanka team.

Opener Kusal Janith Perera also not in good form and he played only one good innings against Australia and his early departure put big pressure on skipper Kusal Mendis. Dhananjaya de Silva the number six batter for first time was among the runs and made quick 30’s at the last game against Netherlands and middle order has issues but we can’t do lot of changes at this stage, said batting coach Naveed Nawaz.
