Nadu rice prices exceed MRP

The Maradagahamula Rice Producers’ Association has stated that the price of Nadu rice in the market has surpassed the control price.

The Association’s chairman – Mr. B.K. Ranjith has stated that a kilo of Nadu rice is currently being sold at over Rs. 230 per kilogram in the retail market, despite a MRP of Rs. 220.

Speaking to the media, Secretary of the Ministry of Trade – Mr. M.M. Naimudeen has said that the matter is being investigated and suggested an ‘artificial shortage’.

Naimudeen has further stated that discussions are underway with large-scale rice mill owners.

Meanwhile, measures are also being taken to purchase Nadu paddy directly through Sathosa, convert it into rice and release it to the market, he has further said.
