NPP to introduce new Constitution safeguarding citizens’ rights

The National People’s Power (NPP) will introduce a new Constitution under its government that will protect the rights of all citizens, former MP Nalinda Jayatissa said.

Addressing a media briefing by the NPP Economic Council, Jayatissa stressed that the Constitution-making process will not be rushed.

“We will bring a new Constitution that safeguards the rights of all citizens. While we won’t commit to a definitive timeline, we will ensure that it is formulated after thorough deliberations and discussions with the people of this country,” he said.

In response to criticisms of the NPP’s election manifesto, Jayatissa stated that NPP members are eager to engage in meaningful debate over its contents.

“We welcome a substantive discussion with our opponents, rather than just social media comments,” he said.

Jayatissa further explained that the manifesto was drafted by experts across 39 fields, who collaborated extensively before finalising the documents.

“This is a scientific and practical document. Those who have done nothing for over seventy years are the ones offering these criticisms. If our manifesto has caused this much of a stir, it only assures us of our impending victory,” he said.
