19 couples get married together

Nineteen unmarried couples, including ones from the same family, had been legally married on the same day in Yatinuwara.

The collective wedding was organised by the Yatinuwara Divisional Secretariat to minismise issues faced by unmarried couples, such as when issuing birth certificates and receiving EPF funds.

The Kandy District Secretary and Yatinuwara Divisional Secretary have signed as witnesses.

CID probing Dinesh Schaffter’s murder

The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) is probing the brutal murder of businessman Dinesh Schaffter, the director of a leading insurance company in the country, Sri Lanka Police said in a statement.

The 51-year-old was found tied inside his vehicle at the General Cemetery in Borella last evening (Dec 15) and was rushed to the ICU of National Hospital in Colombo. He passed away while undergoing treatment.

Dates fixed to consider petitions on LG polls

Two petitions filed by a group of parliamentarians seeking a writ order directing the Elections Commission to hold the Local Government polls were ordered to be taken up for consideration on January 18.

The petitions were called in before the Supreme Court Judge-bench consisting of Justices Priyantha Jayawardene, Kumuduni Wickramasinghe and Achala Vengappuli today (16).
